When considering exterior lighting for your home there are three types that you should be aware of and purchase the type according to your needs.  The three types are outdoor security lighting, landscape lighting, and task lighting.  Each type brings with it its own set of pros and cons as well as aesthetics.  This article will discuss the three types of exterior lighting in hopes of helping you make an informed decision regarding which type or types will be best for you.

Outdoor lighting can add such dimensions to your home that it can even improve your property value just as a great landscaped garen and deck will.  Do not overlook this important addition to your home as exterior lights will soon become one of your favorite aspects of your home.

...or other villains coming to invade your home. Outdoor security lighting should be the number one reason you are considering exterior lights. Law enforcement officers would agree that a home that has and uses their exterior lighting reduces the risk of break-ins for the neighborhood. If everyone on your street all used outdoor lights, then that would make your street so much safer compared to streets without the security lighting.

There are several types of security lighting to consider:

  • Motion Sensor Lights
  • Key chain remote control
  • The ability to operate your exterior lights from any room in your home

Motion Sensors

Motion sensor lights are something I am sure we are all familiar with at this point. I remember the first time I was walking past a house and the lights came on, scared the living daylights out of me, no pun intended. That was my first introduction to motion sensor outdoor lights and I am sure you experience was much the same.

When someone has installed motion sensor lights, the lighting remains off until there is a motion that sets it off, turning on the lights. Now this can be in the form of a human, cat or anything else solid that might move in front of the sensor. This type of exterior light provides security and they save energy since they only illuminate when triggered. This is great when you wish to reduce the light pollution around your house when you are trying to sleep. A few types of security lights that can be set up as motion sensor lights are floodlights, wall mounts, solar powered, and even lantern posts. Now there are even wireless models for the inner tech nerd in you. Motion sensors are very reasonable in price and available at almost every hardware, Internet retailers, or large retail store with a lighting section and are simple to install.

Remote Exterior Lighting - Just Another Thing to Put on Your Key Chain

Have you ever had that feeling of unease when you come home to a dark house? I am forever forgetting to leave lights one when I leave the house and I know I will be coming back after dark. I should take my own advice here and get me a good ole' fashion wireless remote for my key chain! These remotes make it possible to turn on your lights before even getting out of your car when you arrive home. You can set predetermined lights to come on when you press the button on the remote and VOILA your house suddenly becomes an exploding star, able to blind any intruder, so you won't have to worry about them. These wireless remotes are also handy if you hear something in the middle of the night that isn't right, you can press your remote from inside your house and have the same thing happen. These systems are readily available at online and storefront retailers.

Task Lighting

Task lighting, in my opinion, can also be considered landscape lighting because it adds beauty as well as function.  The type of task lighting that first comes to mind are lights that illuminate deck steps and under deck benches.  These lights safely provide a path in the dark and keep you and your guests from an unfortunate incident.  This is especially important if you are serving your specialhomemade wine.

Another form of task lighting/landscape lighting would be lights that line a walk or path.

Landscape Lighting - Curb Appeal and Home Value

Landscape lighting is another form of exterior lighting that is much more fun to talk about than security lighting, although it can also double as that because any lights outside will help deter thieves. Landscape lighting will also give you that extra oomph when it comes to curb appeal and boost your home property value along with the help of your gorgeous organic landscaping. It also extends the life of the party, allowing for you and your guests to continue to safely enjoy the outdoor atmosphere long after the sun has gone down.

Landscape lighting can be used in all sorts of ways to highlight attributes or hide flawed areas of your outdoors. There are many different types of exterior lighting to be used in your landscaping that I am sure you have not thought of half of them. You can use lights to light the path to your walk, solar lights are great for this. They come in many different styles so there would be many to suit any taste. There are up-lights that can be used to highlight certain aspects of your garden or maybe a water fountain. There are deck lights to illuminate your patio or deck during the evening.  Exterior lighting provide beauty and safety in many different ways. Do not pass up the opportunity to improve your home and it's value with some exterior lighting today!
