Coat Rack Crazy
69The first thing that comes to mind when I think of a coat rack is a stand that looks like a tree that sits in the foyer of homes in old sitcoms and movies. The hard working father and husband would come home from work, walk in the door, announce "Honey, I'm home!", take off their hat and coat and place it on the hat stand or coat rack. Today the free standing coat racks are still in existence, but they have also evolved to take on a variety of designs while still maintaining their functionality. Design is also important when thinking about incorporating a coat rack, but no matter if your style is traditional or modern you can find one to fit your design. You only need to ask yourself if you have a need and the space for a coat rack, but almost everyone can answer that with a yes!
The placement of a coat rack is an important factor to consider. If you are interested in a free standing rack, then space is of the utmost importance. You will typically be placing bulky items on a coat rack which will make the space required for one even more. They typically cannot be placed flush to the wall as they have limbs like a tree that shoot out from the base. A coat rack stand is an attractive piece of furniture and makes for a nice conversation piece, but if you do not have the space then you might need to consider a wall mounted coat rack instead. This still provides you with the functionality of what you need the rack for in the first place!
Types of Coat Racks
As previously discussed, there are two types of coat racks, free standing and wall mounted. Each type can and are made from a variety of materials. Wood, metal and even plastic are used to make a coat stand or rack. Plastic stands are lightweight and weather resistant, making them perfect for outdoor use or used for children. When metal is used for coat racks it is usually used with design in mind. Lightweight metals are normally used for modern or contemporary designs and heavier metals for more ornate and traditional designs. Of course there is the always the traditional wood coat stands that are the most versatile and can be used for both traditional and modern design.
A traditional coat rack can be either thin with a smaller base for only a few items or they can be made with a heavier base and thicker stand for a larger amount of coats and hats. If you get a free standing coat stand then it will most likely come with an attached umbrella stand. You can even find racks that are the perfect size for children and that are to be used in their bedrooms or playrooms to keep the room more organized.
A wall coat rack is perfect for those people with limited space. These are typically a set of coat hooks attached to a base that hangs on the wall. If mounted correctly, these racks will withstand a lot of weight and you won't have to worry about it toppling over! Wall mounted coat racks can be both functional and design friendly. They are made from the same materials as traditional stands and can be beautiful in their own right.

we used to have these crazy looking antique coat racks all over an office I worked in - the things were bulky as heck and ironically would still fall over if you tried to hang anything on them. But no one was willing to find a coat rack system that would work better because they'd always been there! Go figure...
